One more Award!

Here is one more Award. This time an X-Mas Greating from Miller DX Club in Russia. All stations used NY in the suffix. A lot of fun working these hams. And here is the Award!

All operators are quite good and have fine ears!! So to you all. Get  on the radio and start chasing stations with 17NY and as you can see in the lower left corner of the Award the different calls used. Good Luck!!

Spent X-Mas down in Varberg. Since Varberg is on 57 deg North it is some differens in Daylight compared to my home location at 60 deg North. But it has turned now. Day's are getting longer and longer for every day we distance us away from December 21 as this was the turning point.

So, now we start to prepare for the New Years Celebration 2017!!!

Take care! And a Happy New Year to you all!!

Monday 19 December 2016

Award from UP25 operations.

Kazakhstan is celebrating 25 years of Independence. So it is a lot of activity from a number of UP25 stations. To get the Award you needed to have confirmed QSO with 25 stations. Dupes allowed on same band but different mode. But it was a challenge to get them. And on the 18 of December I had 25 confirmed. And I was awarded this Award. NICE!

So, to all of you out there. Work as many UP25 stations you can. And you will have this in your hand. Operations will end 31-Dec-2016.

X-Mas is approaching fast. And still no more snow outside. I like that. I do not need to start my snow blower and temperature is around 0 C ( 32 F ).

Marry X-Mas and HNY to all you readers out there. CUL

Wow! QSL from ZL7G

Nigel, G3TXF and his fellows understand the Word "Direct". ZL7G operation was on in mid November. And today I received the QSL. Amazing!!

And they have already uploaded to LoTW. So all is confirmed. The new slots for me this time was CW on 80 m and SSB on 20 m and RTTY was done on 30 m.

So now I'm missing Chatham Island only on 160 and 10 m. I have written about the happenings on 160 m in some earlier post in this blogg. So I have no more comments on use of SDR's in other countries. Wonder if DXCC Rule 9.b is still valid? And when we will have openings on 10 m towards New Zeland next time that is a different story.

Time for coffee!! CUL

PA Interface again.

I have received a few questions on how I build the small transistor switch and how it was installed.
Well, it is installed in the Cable between TRX and PA. But Close to the TRX. About 2" from the 7 pin DIN connector. And I put some heat shrink tubing over it.
This is a Picture of the Components.

The Shadow in the bottom of Picture is from the Lens Hood that I forget to remove.
Next Picture show the finished switch. It is small. It measures 23 X 8 mm (0,9" X 0,3 ").
Observe that I have removed the Lens Hood!!!

So now it is just to install Cable. In the Remote connector the GND is soldered to the connector shield, and in the other end there is a RCA Phono plug that connects to ACOM1000. Next start chasing DX!!??

Hope this will help someone out there!

New Band Slot

QSL from CY9C turned up today. I made a few QSO's with these guys. But unfortunately the only new one was 40 m. Still miss St. Paul Isl on 80 and 160 m. Guess that in August it was a bit to early to work them on low bands, I Think??

But I'm happy with the one I've got. Challenge is now up to 1917. I'm closing in to 2000!!!

Has just come home after a visit to the Dentist. Always fun (!!!!!). But all Went just fine and now I can bite almost anything!!??

Well, that's all for now. CUL

Monday 5 December 2016

Two (2) new IOTA QSL's in my hand.

Today it was almost X-Mas. I  received QSL from Russian Robinson Club operations from August this year.
First was UE23RRC operating from AS-142, Kambalniy Isl (Toporkov). New one for moi!!

Next one was R23RRC operating from AS-091, Ptichiy Isl. Also a new one for moi!!

As Always from RRC the QSL cards are in super quality. Both was from manager Vasily, R7AL. Both cards are 4 pages. but you will only see 1!!!
I now have a total sum of 468 confirmed Isl!!?? But I still miss a few. What about qsl from TF/M0VFE? Wonder when it will show up. Worked a new one this morning. It was 5T5TI from AF-050, Tidra Isl. But this is not on order yet as it was worked this morning.

Well, about the strange weather. Saturday night temp was -14 C ( 6,8 F ). But this morning temp was up to +7 C ( 44 F )??!! You can't say it is a stable situation. Far from.

PA control and a new book!

If there are some interest out there I will show you all how I made the PA Control from Kenwood TRX to my ACOM1000. As I'm allergic to relay clatter I have deactivated the PA relay in both TS-590 and TS-950. So, how do I Control PA? Well, that's quite simple. Kenwood TRX has a remote connector in the rear. It is an 7 pol DIN connector and on pin 7 there are a +12 VDC 10 mA output when TRX is in TX mode. So this is what I used to Control the PA with a simple transistor switch. You can see the schematic here.

I did not have a transistor 2N2222 so I used a BC182. Works just super and no sound what so ever when PA is keyed.

I have got my hand on this antenna book. It is written by Bob Zavrel, W7SX. Very well written and nice topic for hams to get some more insight in how our antennas work. I recommend this book so get one ASAP!

Well, that's all for now. Take care and CUL

Tuesday 22 November 2016

Band slots and a new IOTA.

Yesterday I received QSL from TL0A, Central African Republic. Worked them on some of my missing slots and modes. 30 m CW and 40 m RTTY. And I have worked the present ongoing operation on SSB and he is using the call TL8AO. And I will order his QSL soon.

Here above is the proof!!!

The new IOTA was NA-159 King George Island. They where two operators using their home call. It was K9AJ/VY0 and KD6WW/VY0. For safety reasons I worked them both!!?? One on 30 m and one on 20 m both on CW.

Now my IOTA score has reach the fantastic sum of 460 islands. Of them there are 10 confirmed via Club Log. Hope there will be more confirmations via Club Log. But it is a long way to reach 50% of all islands to get into Honour Roll List. But I will keep on hunting.

So click on the Pictures and enjoy them large on your screen.

Thursday 17 November 2016

Done some changes in my schack.

I have a TS-950SDX put on the side. I have had it out for sale. But no takers. So I decided to use it for rag chewing and low band chasing. The receiver is very good in this old Kenwood TRX.
So, I made an logic switch to be able to use my ACOM1000 with both TS-590S and TS-950SDX.
It works just fine.

You can see the switch just above the Digi Keyer II ( for use with 590 only ). I do have an external keyer from K1EL for to use with 950. It is a K42 Keyer and the keyboard to lower left is for this keyer. All works just fine. And for antenna and input switching to/from the Amp I use a pair of dual antenna switches.

I still not over the fact that I did not work ZL7G on 160 m. But that's Life. Some you get and some you don't!!??

Temp here is warm. Around +5 C ( 41 F ). Most of the hated White fluff is gone!

Saturday 12 November 2016

How do they do it!!!

ZL7G was on 160 and I did put in a lot of effort to hear them and finally work them. But NIL. One day I heard some faint fragments but not enough to start calling them. A few SM stations was Calling and I wonder how they could hear him. I use a K9AY Array and the noise here in the forest is low. So it would be nice to knew what the h..k these hams are using for RX antennas.
This chase was an on going procedure. But I did not hear a single "pip" from ZL7G on 160 any more.

Here you can see my Control head for my K9AY Loop Array. As the noise level here in the middle of forest is very low. I normally hear the DX well. But my TX antenna is some kind of compromise as I use a 24 m vertical with linear loading creating an electrical length of 36 m. And together with a lading coil I get it to show low SWR on 160 m. I have about 2,4 km radials.
But it would be nice to see what these guys that make QSO with rare DX on 160 m are using.

I made an astonishing Discovery! I was out on the web searching for SDR. Found one in Australia. On this SDR I heard ZL7G with 599 Sig's!! On this SDR all users was shown either with call used or IP addresses as you have to log in. BUSTED!!! Now I could hear the perfect timing of some EU stations Calling ZL7G. But on my K9AY there was NIL Sig's. So this is how it is done!!?? What is the value of a such QSO when you don't hear the DX at your location? Is DXCC losing it's value?  Is the effort for being in the top of all lists so big that you have to take such measures to achieve this? I will not say the word "cheating" but it is close in my world. I like to hear the DX at my location and work it in that manner. But modern technique has made this possible. And there are a lot of SDR's out there. I might be old fashion but I stick to hear the station in my RX when I'm trying to work them. So if I don't hear them I can't work them.

IOTA QSL arrived!

Yesterday I received the QSL from Andy's (VK5MAV/6) adventure on OC-266 where he had a close encounter with a big Crocodile. You can read the story on Andy's homepage. But I had the fortune to get a QSO from Viney Island. Pushed my IOTA score up with 1 (!) Point.

This is the QSL.

And this is some additional Pictures from Andy.
We all looking forward to the next IOTA Expedition. Always fun to work Andy.

Here in Sweden the snow keep on falling. Took this Picture on Monday.

This is my K9AY feeding post. But at the moment I have more than double the amount of snow. It is about 1' (aprox 30 cm) of snow. Hope it will stop soon. we are only in November and it is a long way to April. And it is Cold and a lot of snow so there are possibilities it will be like this to April next year.

Well, click on the Pictures and enjoy!

Big suprice this morning!!

I was a bit surprised when I wake up this morning. I was 1" of White fluff on the ground. And it was snowing a lot as you can see on the Picture (White dot's in Picture).

I did not order this shit!!! But I guess I have to live with it!!??

Managed to work ZL7G on RTTY 30 m late Sunday. So now I only miss them on 160. But this might be a difficult task. Only 3 SM has managed to work them on 160 so far. Wonder how they do it. Where do they lsn and transmit??? Heard only some fragments of him (ZL7G) one day btw 15:20 to 16:10 Z. And that was the day some SM worked him. They must have super antennas and receivers with magic RX-antennas, or..............!!! But congratulations to them to get in the 160 m log of ZL7G.

I rest my case!!

Chatham Island

The DXpedition to ZL7 is on. And have been for a while. I miss Chatham on 80 and 160 and Phone and RTTY. Well, 80 m and Phone is done. 160 and RTTY to go.
But to my surprise I uploaded my log to LoTW. And the team on Chatham had already uploaded their log. So my 80 m and Phone QSO is confirmed!!!

This was the Equipment I used to work ZL7G.

To day I have to change tires on my car. It is time for Winter tires with studs. We have had a few cm of snow already. We knew what we will get. The predictions for this area is more snow due to snow showers. And they can be intense. But this is the time of the year and the punishment for living around 60 deg North!!

Playing with my Camera.

I played around last night trying to get a photo of the night sky with all the stars. I used my Nikon D-90 and lens 18-105/3,5-5,6. Wide angle was used (18). ASA set to 3200 and niose reduction to "OFF". Unfortunately there was some light haze in the sky. But I'm still satisfied.
First Picture I pointed the camera towards the Milky way. And this was the result. Exposure time was 15s and fully opened aperture (3,5).

Lots of stars!!
Next Picture I pointed the camera to my antennas as a foreground. During the 30s exposure I "painted" my antenna with a 3 W Led flash light for about 1s. Result as follow.

Not so bad. You can see the Pleiades down to the right side of the Picture.
Well, not so bad for a first attempt!!??

Rare DX in my vicinity!

I have a rare DX just in my vicinity. It is only 75 km ( 45 Miles ) from my own QTH in 51 deg direction. This DX Always create big piles. If you not guessed what it is I can tell you it is Market Reef or Märket as it is called in Swedish. This Reef is partly owned by Sweden and Finland. And it is the Finish part that Counts as OJ0. It can be quite trilling to work OJ0 from my location. Especially on high frequencies. It is to Close.
Last year US5WDX, DL5LYM, SP5XVY and DL3DXX was there and they must have had a lot of fun. I managed to work them on 160 m CW and 40 and 30 m RTTY. Nothing new but it is fun to work good operators.

Nice card of the Buildings on the Reef. Swedish part of the Reef has no Buildings.

Well that's all for now. CUL

WOW! Thrilling week!

This Friday I had surgery in both my eye's. Reason was that I've got a lot of cataract in my left Eye and some in the right. So they replaced both my lenses at the same day (Friday 14 Oct ). Surgery took about 10 minutes per Eye and after a short rest I got the notion that I don't need special glasses any more. Just one pair for Reading only. Amazing!! I have to pinch my self several times a day that I have this clear vision now. .
Surgery was performed under a microscope. And it was totally painless. Only thing noted was a powerful strong light from the microscope straight into the Eye during surgery. So now I have Eye sight almost like a Hawk!!??

 Picture!

We had a brief moment of slight sun light this Monday. And I Went into the forest and took this Picture. And the autumn is progressing fast. We have had mostly cloudy sky and temp around 5 C ( 40 F ). Soon time to put on the Winter tyres on the car.

QSL from a new IOTA

YES! I've got a new IOTA for moi confirmed. It was AS-070 Gusmp Isl. Operators where R7AA, R2DG and UA6EX. Call used was R70ASIA and I worked them in IOTA Contest and the day Before the Contest. Here are the QSL.

I also got a new iota from Club Log direct into my credits. It was OC-273. So now I have the sum of 451 confirmed Groups. I'm slowly getting there!!??

Worked H40GC on 20 m CW. Not new but there where a pile???!!!! V53DX was on 15 m SSB. Same reason! A pile....

But I have worked a new IOTA. AS-131. Call was B7/BD7IHN.

Temperature is hovering around 5 C ( 40 F ) so it is quite could outside. But it will get colder!!

A QSL from Lesotho!

Worked them in February. I managed to get them on some missing band slots and modes. Now I only miss 7P on 160 and 80 m. The call used was 7P8C and QSL verified by F5GSJ. Got it confirmed via LoTW long time ago. Finally this QSL arrived!

Temperature outside has been below freezing during night time. Hopefully this will stop the lawn to grow. But it is to soon yet to stow the lawn cutter for the Winter. Temp at the moment is 3 C ( 37 F ).
Soon we will have the White fluff on the ground.

Yeah!! A QSL arrived!!!

Today I've got QSL from South Africa. It is from AF-064 Robben Isl. Worked them on 20 m SSB and this is a new IOTA for me.

This is the Island where Nelson Mandela spent most of his Life in prison. But that is history now.
Nice card and it pushed my IOTA score up one more Point.

This weekend it is CQWW RTTY Contest. And I will chase some new ones if conditions will permit it!

Bad conds and no QSL's!

Activity is low from all sides as I have not received a single QSL and no spectacular QSO to brag about. The only thing that is Active is the sun. At the moment K index is 6 and if you look to the right side of this blog you can see a lot of red saying "POOR". Worked a few new IOTA. What about VK5MAV/6 from OC-266 and SV8/IZ4JMA from EU-075. But that is just about all.
Autumn is here and the colours in nature is starting to change to orange. My neighbour's animals is enjoying Life as it is as you can see on the Picture.

Hope the sun will calm down a bit. I'm missing D6 on 160, 80 and 40. Hope the team present on Comoros at the moment will be Active on low bands. But conds have to improve!!!

DX Meeting in Jönköping.

The first DX-Match DX meeting happened this weekend in the city of Jönköping. Lots of interesting talks. What about the following:
DF6JC talked about ooperation from Lord Howe, VK9DLX. LA7GIA about his operations from Africa as 3C7A, D67GIA and an upcoming to TL8AO. DL6KVA talked about the fantastic operations from VP8STI and VP8SGI. He also talked about his adventure in Russia working very rare RDA's. LB2TB talked about VK9CK Cocos (Keeling). SM6CPY talked about his adventures in Africa as 9X0PY and 5H3CJ. And K9CT held 3 interesting talk's about Navassa K1N and Palmyra K5P and his fantastic Contest station he has in the US.

Here is a Picture when Craig held one of his talk's. Quality of Picture is not so good as it was from my I-phone. There was about 90 hams listening to the interesting talk's. Next DX-Meeting will be held same time in two years from now.

So there have been no radio this weekend but now I'm home and today I will perform some maintenance on my RX Antenna K9AY to prepare it for the dark season??!!

I also got QSL from Galapagos Isl. It was HC2OGT/8 worked on 10 m.

And this was a new one on 10 m for moi!!!

Low activity. But chasing CY9C.

I have been chasing CY9C. Wanted on 160, 80 and RTTY. The sun has been a bit active so no low band QSO so far. RTTY is a different story. I can only run about 600 W to my Australian TE56 antenna. If I run more Power I will melt the traps. And it is hard to get through the wall from Southern EU as well as US East Cost. Not easy from Northern EU with low Power. But yesterday I called about 2,5 Hrs on 20 m. No QSO!! Than for some reason He QSY:ed to 17 m and I could not hear him on 17 m. Well, I will try again today!!

Got a new (for moi) I-Phone. It is an 5S. And I'm very satisfied with it. I just updated the IOS to 9.3.5. And I tested the camera and you can see the Picture below.

New IOTA's confirmed in Club Log

Yes! I managed to get in the log of VE3LYC/KL7 from NA-172. QSL on order via OQRS.

The same with AS-062 with the call RI0FS from Shikotan Isl. I'm  in the log according to Club Log. Not ordered any QSL yet due to OQRS not opened.

So, two new IOTA's for moi! Thanks to both operators.

Found this visitor on my doorstep. It is an edible snail (vineyard).

Well, I put him back into the forest.

Still missing a lot of IOTA QSL's. The Club Log Connection to RSGB IOTA page has so far just added one ( 1 ) QSL to my credit list.

Worked VE3LYC/KL7

YES! I managed to work Cezar on 20 m at 07:07 Z date 4/8. He was not so strong but he had as usual very good ears. Now I'm waiting for the OQRS so I can order a QSL for NA-172.

Have rebuilt my schack. So now the TS-590S id dedicated to RTTY and also 50 MHz together with an ACOM1000 and a microHAM Digikeyer II. Work just fine.

Tuned to 80 m RTTY at the moment.

Worked JT1CO and his Contest call JT5DX on 50 MHz in June. A new one on 50 MHz for me. According to LotW he is an LoTW member but he do not upload his log. Sent a few e-mail to him so he can tell me how to get QSO confirmed on LoTW. But he do not answer. I suspect he just want some $$$$. But that will not happened.

Activity here has been low. Operated in IOTA Contest this weekend in S&P. Only 6 new was found.

Flowers in my garden is in full bloom.

Weather is quite warm during daytime and Cold at night. This morning it was 7 C ( 44 F ). We have had a lot of rain last week. About 80 mm i total. Also a lot of lighting. Hope it will calm down a bit.

Top is front side and bottom is rear side. Worked them on 80 to 10 m and managed to get them on CW, SSB and RTTY. And they have already confirmed the QSO's on LoTW. Super operation and nice with the envelope. They did the same with Tromelin, FT4TA. Hope they will become collectors item's.

Well, I have been in Varberg this weekend visiting my daughter. We vent down to a Place called Tvååker and looked at an K9 (dog) Exhibition with more than 7000 (!!!!) thousands K9 of all kind of breeds. And the weather was just super nice with temp around 20 C and sunny.

Low Activity and soon Midsummer!

Tomorrow it is midsummer celebration here in Sweden. During this coming weekend about 90 % of the population is drunk!! Have been low activity on my blog. Worked a few new ones on 50 MHz. But most of the time the activity is South of me.
Belgum beat us out of the UEFA Europe Soccer Championship. And Marcus Ericsson in Sauber F1 Team is not doing so well. So there is not much to be happy about.
But the flowers in my garden is doing just fine. What about this big red one? It is a peony. Very nice indeed!

We have passed the summer solstice. So from now on the Days will be shorter and we are going in to the dark times!!!??? Well, not so bad as the low band will be opening again and my stack of firewood is full so I can keep me warm during this dark time.
Sounds depressing, isn't it!!. Well, it is not! This is the cyckle of Life here at 60 Deg North.

YES! I've got some QSL's!!

I've got two QSL's today. First out is EP2A, Iran. I only needed 160 and 80 m to fill my score for Challenge Award. And this was an easy task. So 160 and 80 is confirmed and all is fine.

And here are proof of a nice QSL. Thanks to all operators for some fun time at the radio.

Next out is a very rare DX. Heard Island and here I had just one QSO before and that was with VK0CW DXpedition from 1983. So here I was in need of many QSO's and SSB and RTTY as well. And this turned out to be a relative easy task (!!!). I worked them 11 times and got it all!!! From 160 to 10 m except 20 m all on CW. SSB was on 20 m and RTTY was 15 m. So I don't need Heard any more (sad to say). And I guess this is due to the very skilled operators in the team.

Nice QSL. Wonder what the Penguin's are thinking?! In which direction is the food?? Or, how do we get home???

There have been quite a few memorial DXpeditions this spring. What about K5P Palmyra, VP8 from South Sandwich and South Georgia, FT4JA Juan de Nova (no QSL yet) and EP2A and VK0EK just to mention a few. So there have been some nice times spent at the radio.

Well, that's all for now. CUL

New IOTA confirmed

Hawar Island AS-202 was announced as a new IOTA in July 2014. In April 2016 the first activation happened with a team from Russia, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Ireland and UK. They used the call A91HI and made over 23000 QSO's. Well done indeed!!!

So my IOTA score is now up to 444 Islands!!

Swedish summer has started. Rain, rain and some TS and some more rain!!?? Temp outside is about 8 C (46 F) and inside 18C (64 F). I have turned off all heaters as it should be summer and heater is not needed in theory. But in reality I have to put on a fire in my fireplace to get some comfort inside. I have a lot of fire wood so no big deal!

New DXCC confirmed by ARRL.

Read on DX-World that 5A1AL operations was approved by ARRL. As I had my QSO rejected in an application to ARRL in 2014. I sent an e-mail to DXCC Admin with a request to get Libya confirmed. And within 2 day's  my DXCC record was up one Point. Super thanks to Sharon at ARRL for Swift correction and answer.

I have a lot of spruce trees (fir tree) on my property. And now they are in full bloom.

All my spruce trees are reddish with these tiny small flowers. Nice!

Next Picture capture an insect eating from a yellow flower. So summer is here for sure.

Not much related to ham radio but nice to show something else now and then. Have cut my lawn for the first time this year.

Take care and CUL
